Niger State Police command has arrested no fewer than five youths for allegedly invading Butchi Police Station, in Mariga council area and killing two suspected members of a three-man gang, they forcefully set free from police custody.
It was gathered that the three persons were said to have been arrested by the police in the area over the theft of a number of motorcycles in Bangi, head quarters of Mariga local council on May 5.
When youths of the area got wind of the arrest, they stormed the station, brandishing dangerous weapons and demanding for the release of the three armed robbers. They forcefully took two away to pass jungle justice on them.
A press statement signed by the commands’ Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Richard Oguche and made available to the Sunday Mirror, said the angry youths and some of their members still at large invaded the station and overpowered the Policemen on duty. It stated that they vandalised the police station, gained entrance into the cell and set two of the suspected motorcycle thieves.
“At the point of trying to rebuff the youth, the Divisional Crimes Officer was able to rescue one of the three suspected men of the underworld and took him away to the Police Area Commander, at Kontagora where the suspect was detained while the mob succeeded in killing the remaining two suspects in their custody,” the statement added.
The police command also stated that after the angry youths had succeeded in killing the two men and discovered that the DCO had escaped with the third suspect, they got angry and bounced on the police station and vandalised the louvre blades, doors and some other infrastructure at the station.
