Aminu Kassim, a JSS 3 student who represented the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the just concluded National Quranic Competition, today, received a car, N560,000 cash, scholarship to University level, a Quran and a laptop for emerging as the winner of the competition.
The gifts were handed over to Kassim by the FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed expressed delight over the feat achieved by the FCT Contingent at the competition.
The Minister therefore, directed the FCT Education Secretariat to award full scholarship from Primary School to the University level to Aminu Kassim, the winner of the competition.
While announcing an additional N500,000 gift, he also directed the FCT Permanent Secretary to officially write Master Aminu Kassim for the Scholarship award instituted to ensure that subsequent FCT Administrations abide by the pronouncement.
The Minister, who noted that parents/guardians have vital roles to play in the development of their children, urged them not to abdicate such important responsibilities.
He emphasized that children are assets to the parents and the society at large; stressing that everything must be done to inculcate in them sound morals and best societal values.The Minister challenged the FCT Quranic Competition Committee to ensure that FCT wins the subsequent edition of the Quranic competition back to back in order to set pace for the 36 States of the federation to follow.
In a related development, 26 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) today converged in Abuja to compete for medals at the 10th edition of the Annual National Table Tennis Competition.
Olajumoke Akinjide, FCT Minister of State who flagged off the event, noted that the 2013 edition of the competition has recorded tremendous improvement as participants of the Annual National Table Tennis competition are drawn from the 36 States of the Federation and the FCT”.
Akinjide who was represented by Alimi Musa, FCT Director of Sport noted that 189 players from 10 States and FCT participated in the 9th Edition held in May 2012 while 26 States and FCT are represented in this year’s edition.
While stressing the need for the development of other sporting activities in the country, Akinjide reiterated the FCT Administration’s commitment towards ensuring the “development and promotion of sports in the territory. Practical example is our approval for the Aso Table Tennis Club to host the 10th edition of this competition here in Patience Jonathan Youth Support Centre. This competition is the first event to be held in this Centre since it was commissioned”.
She urged the organizers to keep up the good work as they look forward to the 11th Edition which should have participants from all the 36 States of the Federation and FCT as well as participants from other countries of the world.
