No fewer than 13, 398 crashes involving vehicles and commercial motorcycles popularly called okada were recorded in the last 15 months in Lagos State.
Of the crashes, 148 deaths were recorded.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said the data were gathered from the various public health institutions across the state.
Idris, his transport counterpart, Mr. Kayode Opeifa; and that of Information and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba, spoke yesterday at the Bagualda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
Idris said: “13, 398 accidents were recorded in Lagos State from January 2012 to March 2013. The crashes involving vehicles were 7, 267, while those involving okada were 6, 131 in the last 15 months.
“For okada, the peak was in February 2012 and August 2012. In August, we recorded 646 okada accidents while we recorded 696 in February. Ever since August, we have experienced a steady decline in the number of road traffic accidents. As at march 2013, it has declined to 126 due to the introduction of the road traffic law in August last year.”
