Chelsea lose out on cavani chase

Chelsea's pursuit of Edinson Cavani looks to be over with Paris Saint-Germain expected to meet Napoli’s £54m release fee for the Uruguayan and complete his signing early this week, write Jonathan Northcroft and Duncan Castles. Cavani, 26, was Jose Mourinho’s leading target in a search for a new striker but after having a £43m bid rejected last week, Chelsea declined to improve it and PSG made a £49m offer.

That was also rejected but PSG have indicated they are willing to go higher in the bidding and Napoli expect to secure the full buy-out figure set by Aurelio De Laurentiis, their president, and for Cavani to join the French champions. Failure to land him would leave Chelsea with a headache. Robert Lewandowski, another target, remains apparently resolved on trying to push through a move from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich.

It may leave Mourinho going back in for Wayne Rooney, even though David Moyes, in his first press conference as Manchester United manager, declared the England international is “not for sale”. Patrice Evra is considering a move to Real Madrid as Moyes pursues Everton left-back Leighton Baines. Discussions have been held with Monaco over a transfer back to the club where he established himself but Madrid are long-term admirers of Evra.

Manchester City remain in pursuit of Alvaro Negredo, the £20m Sevilla striker, but reports that a deal is nearly done are understood to be premature.
