There are reports of a heavy exchange of fire in Sokoto between yet to identify gunmen and a combined team of police and soldiers since the early hours of this morning.An eyewitness said the shooting started as early as two o’clock, and the area has been cordoned off by security forces. Unconfirmed reports say the gun men may be armed robbers that some security personnel have been trailing for some days.In the past few days, there has been a heavy security upgrade in Sokoto, with checkpoints mounted at most road junctions. The police have also been conducting stop and search routines.
The new security measures have not been explained.
