The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, yesterday threatened to dispose off every piece of unclaimed baggage at all the airports in the country most especially at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos.
This, the agency said became necessary following the littering of the ‘Tango City’ at MMIA with the unclaimed luggage.
The agency said some of the items have been there for years without anybody coming forward to claim them. ‘Tango City’ isa section of the airports where abandoned luggage are kept pending recovery.
This much was revealed to National Mirror yesterday on phone by the General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati. Dati said that there are no fewer than 500 items ranging from ipads, laptops, jewelries, electric and electronic appliances left unclaimed by travellers.
He emphasised further that the agency would soon issue an ultimatum to the owners to claim them or forfeit them permanently, stressing that the items might be taken to orphanage homes if they remain unclaimed.
He said, “I think this is very important because several passengers have allege that their luggage are stolen at the airport, but the real fact is that most of these baggage are forgotten or abandoned by the passengers.
“If you go to our Tango City at the airport now, there are several items left there over the years. The place is littered to the extent that we are thinking of disposing them off. People forget these baggage and alleged that it was stolen.
