Baby Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire yesterday defeated hard-fighting Golden Eaglets of Nigeria 5-4 on penalties after a pulsating 1-1 draw to lift the CAF U-17 Championship concluded in Marrakech, Morocco.
Nigeria opened scoring through Prince Omego in the 8th minute before Cote d’Ivoire equalised also in the first half. Scores at the end of first half was 1-1 apiece.
However things began to look dicey for the Eaglets when their lone goalscorer, Omego was red carded in the 74th minute thereby giving the Baby Elephants the needed confidence to forge ahead in the explosive encounter.
Eaglets who occasionally became resilient in their attacks piled up more pressure, but the Baby Elephants held on stoutly with occasional breakthrough until the end of regulation time, to leave scores at 1-1 apiece.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, the champions, Cote d’Ivoire converted all their five kicks, while Nigeria converted four, no thanks to Chidiebere Nwakali who lost the second kick of the penalty shootout.
Prior to the final game, Cote d’Ivoire was the only team to have beaten Nigeria so far and the Eaglets made it no secret that the defeat was still fresh in their minds and they were seeking redemption, but that dream became a mirage.
