Red Meat is Carcinogenic says world health

PARIS (AP) -- Hot dogs, bacon, cold cuts and other processed meats raise the risk of colon, stomach and other cancers, and red meat probably contributes to the disease, too, the World Health Organization said Monday, throwing its considerable authority behind what many doctors have been warning for years.
WHO's cancer agency analyzed decades of research on the subject and issued its most definitive statement yet, putting processed meats in the same danger category as smoking or asbestos, though that doesn't mean, say, salami is as bad as cigarettes.
The meat industry protested the classification, arguing that cancer isn't caused by a specific food but also involves lifestyle and environmental factors.
A group of 22 scientists from the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, evaluated more than 800 studies from several continents about meat and cancer. The studies looked at more than a dozen types of cancer in populations with diverse diets over the past 20 years.
Based on that evaluation, the IARC classified processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans," noting links in particular to colon cancer. It said red meat contains some important nutrients, but still labeled it "probably carcinogenic," with links to colon, prostate and pancreatic cancers.
The agency said it did not have enough data to define how much processed meat is too dangerous, but said the risk grows with the amount consumed. Analysis of 10 of the studies suggested that a 50-gram portion of processed meat daily — or about 1.75 ounces — increases the risk of colorectal cancer over a lifetime by about 18 percent.
An ounce and three-quarters is roughly equivalent to a hot dog or a couple of slices of bologna, though it depends on how thinly it is sliced.
"For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed," Dr. Kurt Straif of the IARC said in a statement. "In view of the large number of people who consume processed meat, the global impact on cancer incidence is of public health importance."
The cancer agency noted research by the Global Burden of Disease Project suggesting that 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide are linked to diets heavy in processed meat — compared with 1 million deaths a year linked to smoking, 600,000 a year to alcohol consumption and 200,000 a year to air pollution.
WHO's findings can influence public health recommendations around the globe.
Doctors in rich countries especially have long warned that a diet loaded with red meat is linked to cancers, including those of the colon and pancreas. The American Cancer Society has long urged people to eat less red meat and processed meat.
Overall, the lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 20, or about 5 percent, according to the cancer society. This risk is slightly lower in women than in men.
The WHO researchers defined processed meat as anything transformed to improve its flavor or to preserve it, including sausages, canned meat, beef jerky and anything smoked. They defined red meat as "all types of mammalian muscle meat, such as beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse and goat."
The report said grilling, pan-frying or other high-temperature methods of cooking red meat produce the highest amounts of chemicals suspected of causing cancer.
Ian Johnson, a nutrition researcher with the Institute of Food Research who is unconnected to the IARC findings, said meat consumption is one of many factors contributing to high rates of bowel cancer in the U.S., western Europe and Australia.
"The mechanism is poorly understood, and the effect is much smaller than, for example, that of cigarette smoking on the risk of lung cancer," he said.
The North American Meat Institute argued in a statement that "cancer is a complex disease not caused by single foods" and stressed the importance of lifestyle and environmental factors

The Federal Government has filed a fresh charge of money laundering against former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki. The former National Security Adviser is standing trial for illegal arms possession while he was in office.
At the resumed hearing of the case at the Federal High Court (FHC) Abuja today October 26th, Counsel to the Federal Government, Shuaib Labaran filed the fresh charge and asked the court to grant its request for a secret trial and also grant that the witnesses brought in by the Department of State Services (DSS) to be masked.
Dasuki's counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), opposed the application of a secret trial, arguing that the case is a harmless one within a democratic setting. The presiding Judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, adjourned the case to Wednesday October 28th for ruling.

Two survivors of the tragic incident that saw a Bristow helicopter crash into the lagoon in Oworonshoki, Lagos on Wednesday 12th August, 2015 have testified that it was 'God's hand' that saved them from certain death. On Sunday 25th October, oil workers Chukwudi Onah and Dolu Ebiejuara appeared in the church of controversial Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua to thank God for preserving their lives in the disaster that led to six fatalities, including that of the pilot and co-pilot.

According to Onah, it was 'Morning Water' he had received at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations' (SCOAN) that was instrumental to his survival. "I never leave it anywhere I am going. It's always with me, along with my Anointing Sticker," he explained to the congregation.
"On that fateful day, before I left my room, I prayed that God would take charge and thanked Him for journeying mercies," he continued, stating that he sprayed the 'Morning Water' upon himself.
According to Onah, there were no signs of trouble as the flight was going "very smoothly". However, merely minutes away from arriving at Lagos Murtala Muhammed Airport (DNMM), tragedy struck.
"The chopper suddenly turned," Onah vividly described. "Everybody became confused. We were shouting Jesus! The chopper was dangling up and down. I didn't even know when it fell inside the water."
As the Bristow Sikosky S76 C+ helicopter began descending steadily to the bottom of the lagoon, Onah was strapped heavily into his seatbelt and could not move. "I shouted, 'God of TB Joshua - save me' ", he recounted, adding that his lungs soon filled up with water.
According to the SEDCO oil worker, what transpired next can only be termed 'supernatural'. Staring death in the face, confused and struggling to free himself, Onah said he heard a 'voice' speaking clearly to him.
"It's just as you are hearing me now. The voice said, 'Your seatbelt.' I took my hand to the side of the seat belt and it became suddenly loose. The same voice came again and said, 'Your lifejacket'. I took my hand to the side of the life-jacket and it suddenly inflated. It now carried me up from down to the top of the sea."
Onah somberly recounted that the two passengers seated directly besides him were among the fatalities. "If not for Jesus, I would have died. I give the glory to Jesus Christ who saved my life," he said, bringing out the 'Anointing Sticker' from his pocket that he had with him on the day of the ill-fated journey.
Dolu Ebiejuara similarly stated that he was a regular visitor to The SCOAN and had ministered 'Morning Water' before entering the helicopter that day. Recounting his experience, he said, "All that I saw was the helicopter take a sharp turn and then we were just plummeting down."
Moments before the crash, Ebiejuara said that he lost consciousness. "All I could remember was that I saw myself swimming. There is no way I could have come out of the helicopter without removing my seat belt but I was not the one. I don't even know how I came out under the water. I know it is God's doing because there is God's hand in the Morning Water."
The duo both sustained injuries but have since recovered. They were accompanied by more than seventeen family members who came to share the testimony.

Intriguingly, T.B. Joshua himself was not present in the service, making it more than five months since he has been seen in public.

President of the Ijaw Youth Council IYC, Udengs Eradiri has asked the antigraft agencies to leave embattled former petroleum minister, Dieziani Alison Madueke alone and focus on other governors who have been accused of stealing from their state treasuries.
Dieziani is facing money laundering charges in the UK. In a media parley over the weekend, Udeng said that the recent arrest of Dieziani by the British police has shown that president Buhari's anti-corruption campaign is targeted at the Ijaws.
“The UK government should stay away from Diezani. This was how they muscled up and now (Diepreiye) Alamieyeseigha is dead. Now they have started with Diezani. They should leave Ijaw People alone. Are there no other governors that have stolen? Go to UK, almost all the streets are owned by northerners who stole Nigeria money. As far as we are concerned, the anti-corruption fight is a fight against the Ijaw people. So why are they just on Goodluck Jonathan’s men, just to demonise Goodluck. As far as we are concerned, the anti-corruption fight is a fight against the Ijaw people. Goodluck should have won Nobel Prize for peace. Goodluck deserves a Nobel peace prize, Goodluck deserves respect from Nigerians,” he said.
He also accused the relevant security agencies of turning a blind eye on illegal mining in the north which according to him, is mostly operated by retired generals
“They say oil theft is economic sabotage, what of the illegal mining that are going on in the north? Is that not worst economic sabotage?. At a point there was lead poisoning as a result of illegal mining. The monies that they realize from illegal mining is huge, why do we not have the JTF policing illegal miners, knowing full well that the money realised from gold illegally mined is far much more than money realized from stolen oil. Retired generals have mines of their own in the north, the statistics are there. Why are we not talking about those minerals in the north that are illegally mined to the pockets of individuals? Why is it that only Niger Delta oil that is in the pages of newspapers,” he asked.

Senior Pastor of the Household of God Church, Chris Okotie, yesterday took a swipe at the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, accusing him of sharing false prophecies with former President Jonathan. Okotie who said this while delivering his sermon at his church yesterday October 25th, said Oritsejafor used false prophecies to make Jonathan contest for the election
"Pastor Oritsejafor deceived Jonathan with a false prophecy from God that he (Jonathan) would win the election convincingly. The man became convinced to contest after Oritsejafor had told him, using CAN’s name, that God had ordained him the winner of the 2015 presidential election.
While I continued to write and speak that Jonathan was not the man, those of them who knew the truth in what I was saying chose to keep quiet out of fear. I told CAN and PFN that Jonathan was not of God; that whosoever would win would be one that had built a tabernacle in the presence of God. I told CAN and PFN that Jonathan did not belong to the House of David and that since he did not belong to the household, his winning would bring more sorrow to Nigeria.” he said (Source: Punch)

Germaine Greer, the second-wave feminist best known for her 1970 book The Female Eunuch, accused Caitlyn Jenner of “stealing the limelight” from the other women of the Kardashian clan in an appearance on BBC2’s Newsnight.
During the interview, Greer said that “misogyny played a big part” in Glamour magazine’s decision to award Jenner their woman of the year award.
She also defended previous statements in which she claimed that trans women were not “real women.” via The Guardian
“She also refused to back down from her position that transgender women, who have begun life as men before undergoing surgery and hormone treatment to become women, are ‘not women,’ saying they do not ‘look like, sound like or behave like women’.”
Greer’s statements prompted a petition circulated by Cardiff University students. The petition, aimed at having Greer barred from giving a speech on campus, was started by Rachael Melhuish, women’s officer at the Cardiff University Students’ Union. It claims that Greer has“demonstrated time and time again her misogynistic views towards trans women, including continually ‘misgendering’ trans women and denying the existence of transphobia altogether.”

By Saturday, the petition had more than 800 signatures.
In response to the petition, Greer told The Guardian:
“I don’t really know what I think of it. It strikes me as a bit of a put-up job really because I am not even going to talk about the issue that they are on about.
What they are saying is that because I don’t think surgery will turn a man into a woman I should not be allowed to speak anywhere.”
Despite both controversy and petition, Cardiff University said that it would not cancel Greer’s speech. “Our events include speakers with a range of views, all of which are rigorously challenged and debated,” a university spokesperson said in a statement to the New York Times.
Greer’s comments on trans women very much echo Elinor Burkett’s controversial New York Times article, “What Makes a Woman.” The two seem to share a kind of gender essentialism in which biology, and the experiences that often result from that biology, determine gender identities. It’s a weird and inconsistent perspective, particularly for second-wave feminists like Greer, whose ideologies are ostensibly underpinned by deconstructing the very idea of fixed and never-shifting gender.

Rotimi Amaechi the immediate past governor of Rivers state, had a thanksgiving service in Port Harcourt yesterday to celebrate the 8th year of the supreme court ruling that made him governor of the state on October 25th 2007.
During the service which was attended by APC leaders in the state including the APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, Amaechi accused the state governor, Nyesom Wike of borrowing N45 billion loan which he cannot account for.
“I borrowed N300bn and I paid N245bn back and I left about N15bn. But now, they are not borrowing to pay contractors. Rather they are borrowing for themselves. Borrow to pay contractors not for your purse. They have borrowed N45bn and nobody is seeing it. If you put N45bn in the state economy, the state will be bouncing. They will employ more workers, pay them and you will see things working. It is those roads that I have done that they are driving on. The stadium road was done by me and they are driving on it. I did underground gutter, but they are building gutter and covering it" he said.

Catholic bishops called Saturday for a more welcoming church for cohabitating couples, gays and Catholics who have divorced and civilly remarried, endorsing Pope Francis’ call for a more merciful and less judgmental church.

Bishops from around the world adopted a final document at the end of a divisive, three-week synod on providing better pastoral care for Catholic families.
It emphasizes the role of discernment and individual conscience in dealing with difficult family situations, in a win for liberal bishops.
Conservatives had resisted offering any wiggle room in determining, for example, whether civilly remarried Catholics can receive Communion since church teaching forbids it. While the document doesn’t chart any specific path to receiving the sacraments as originally sought by the liberals, the document opens the door to case-by-case exceptions to church teaching by citing the role of discernment and conscience.
The three paragraphs dealing with the issue barely reached the two-thirds majority needed to pass, but conservatives couldn’t muster enough votes to shoot them down. That will give Francis the manoeuvring he needs if he wants to push the issue further in a future document of his own.
In a final speech to the synod, Francis took some clear swipes at the conservatives who hold up church doctrine above all else, and use it to cast judgment on others who don’t measure up.
Francis said the synod had “laid bare the closed hearts which frequently hide even behind the church’s teachings and good intentions, in order to sit in the chair of Moses and judge, sometimes with superiority and superficiality, difficult cases and wounded families.”
“The synod experience also made us better realize that the true defenders of doctrine are not those who uphold its letter, but its spirit; not ideas but people; not formulas but the free availability of God’s love and forgiveness,” he said.
The document is the culmination of a two-year process launched by Francis to put in practice his call for a church that is more a “field hospital for wounded souls” than an exclusive club for the perfect.
The bishops took his direction, finding “positive elements” in couples who live together even though they are not married. Rather than condemning these couples for living in sin, the document says pastors should look at their commitment constructively and encourage them to transform their union in a sacramental marriage.
On gays, the synod document repeats church teaching that gays should be respected and loved and, in a novelty, says families with gay members require particular pastoral care. It strongly rejects gay marriage, but omits references to church teaching that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.”
Only the 275 synod “fathers” were allowed to vote — none of the handful of women invited to participate — even though one of the “fathers” with voting rights wasn’t even a priest, much less a bishop.
“If this synod were the church, I would say that it’s the end of judging people, the end of a church that passes judgment on all the situations,” said Belgian Bishop Lucas Van Looy. “It’s a church that welcomes, a church that accompanies, a church that listens, a church that also speaks with clarity.”

A 32 year old panties pervert used a home-made fishing rod to steal hundreds of pairs of worn underwear from unsuspecting women.
The deviant would cast his rod into the homes and gardens of women and attempt to catch a their underwear.
After snaring a bra or panties he would then reel in his "catch" before pocketing them and running away.
The man, known only by his last name Zhang, was finally caught after being stopped by police during a routine vehicle check in the eastern Chinese city of Liyang last month.
As officers flung open the doors of his van, they were stunned to discover a seedy haul of 285 bras and 185 panties - all worn. He was also found to have pilfered a further 102 items of clothing and later admitted he had collected the items over a three year period.
According to reports in China, Zhang told officers he had started by simply taking one or two items but soon became unable to control himself.
As his lust for used lingerie grew he took greater risks and created his "fishing rod" to help him swipe even more unmentionables.
Police said the man has been sent for psychiatric assessment and that a criminal investigaiton has been opened.
The incident is the latest in a number of cases where men have been caught stealing hundreds of pairs of women's underwear.

In a cheesily worded letter to Bieber's listed commercial agent that was also sent to The Huffington Post, Clone-A-Willy wrote:
"Justin Bieber, he's popular, talented and now as the entire world knows ... quite well-endowed. You can only imagine ... a huge billboard of Justin Bieber and "Clone-A-Willy" in West Hollywood. It would surely do wonders to help promote his new album and certainly wouldn't hurt his "dating" life.

If there's a buck to be made from the incident, Clone-A-Willy (its product shown below) is being upfront about it and wants to milk the exposure.
The brand says its kit produces "a vibrating silicone replica of any penis in the comfort of your own home."

Justin Bieber wins 5 awards at the MTV EMAs

Pop singer Justin Bieber dominated the MTV EMAs with five European music awards Sunday night, including for best male performer, best fans, best collaboration and best look.
"It's been a long couple of years. I just feel it's awesome to be recognized for my music," Bieber, who was up for six awards, told the crowd.
Dressed in a red ensemble, Bieber performed his single "What Do You Mean?" for screaming fans inside the Mediolanum Center in Italy's fashion capital of Milan.
As he picked up his award for best collaboration, Bieber said "it's been a pretty good night." By the time he took the fifth award, for best look, he just said "Wow."
"I don't know what to say, I got these looks from my mamma," Bieber added.
He also won the worldwide act: North America category.
Taylor Swift, who led all artists with nine nominations, took just one prize, best song, for "Bad Blood," featuring Kendrick Lamar. Rihanna won best female performer while Nicki Minaj took best hip hop.
One Direction won for best pop group, preventing Bieber from sweeping all the awards for which he was nominated. None of those acts were on hand to accept, and only Minaj sent along a video "thank you."

The mother of a 14-year-old girl says her child is facing assault and battery charges for throwing a baby carrot at her school teacher.
The teen was leaving class when she spotted a former teacher of hers in the hallway of Moody Middle School in Henrico County, Virginia. She reached into her pocket and tossed a leftover carrot from lunch at the teacher, which hit the woman in the forehead, according to WTVR.
The student has been suspended from school for a month.
In school documents, administrators claim that the carrot was used as a weapon, but the girl maintains that the root veggie toss was meant as a joke.

"I don't even know how to combat the stupidity," the girl's mother, Karrie May, told CBS 6.
The school's disciplinary review board sent the family a letter trying to get the girl to admit guilt, but they declined. Now, they are awaiting a summons to see what's next.
Todd Stone, a legal expert says that the firmness of the carrot could affect the case.
"If it's a soft carrot, it may not be as offensive,” Stone says, “But if it's a raw carrot, you don't have to have an injury or show you were hurt to prove a battery."
Well...don't throw things at your teacher and you wont get into this kind of trouble.
