NIGERIA Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, today begins a nationwide three-day warning strike over, among others things, perceived unfair labour practices by Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC; Chevron Nigeria Limited and Agip Oil Company
Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, have been directed not to load products in all fuel depots and tank farms across the country, during the three days warning strike.NUPENG is also protesting the alleged refusal of National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, to implement the signed collective bargaining agreement with PTD, and the sorry state of Nigerian roads. The union warned that should government and other stakeholders fail to address its grievances after the three-day warning strike, it would declare an indefinite strike.Specifically, NUPENG is lamenting alleged worsening unfair labour practices by SPDC, Chevron and Agip Oil, accusing them of inhuman treatment of Nigerians through casualisation and outsourcing of workers, among others. It argued that if the agreements reached with the multinational companies at a meeting called by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, in May 2012, was implemented, these issues would have been redissolved investigation revealed that close to 90 percent of Nigerians working in the petroleum industry are either contract, casual or outsourced workers with conditions of work not commensurate with industry standards and best global practices. These workers remain without job security terminal benefits, among others, for many years, without conversion to permanent workers.Contract workers are being handed over to labour outsourcing companies without receiving terminal benefits. The outsourcing of labour to contractors exposes workers to possible exploitation and often times these contractors prevent workers from join the union. It would be recalled that NUPENG had on June 6, in Lagos, issued a 14-day strike notice to the Federal Government over disputes with SPDC, Chevron and Agip, threatening a nationwide strike. The union called on the Federal Government to summon an all-stakeholders’ national conference on oil and gas to address, among others, labour issues in the sector before the expiration of the ultimatum or the union would declare an indefinite nationwide strike.
NUPENG scribe speaks
General Secretary of NUPENG, Isaac Aberare, said the three-day warning strike, starting today, was to protest unfair labour practices by oil multinationals namely.
He said: “The strike is also to protest the refusal of NARTO to implement the signed collective bargaining agreement with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers and the sorry state of roads across the nation.
“The union calls for understanding from Nigerians, as all efforts by the Ministry of Labour intervention three weeks ago have failed.”
Agip sacked 93 without benfits, says NUPENG President
President of NUPENG, Achese Igwe, accused Agip Oil of terminating the appointment of 93 contract workers that had worked with the firm for between 25 and 35 years, without benefits despite directives by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
He also accused the firm of promoting 96 workers, who have spent over 15 years as contract workers under NUPENG, to Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, as contract staff, instead of converting them to full time workers.
Igwe accused Chevron of converting workers from contract labour to service labour.
He said SPDC refused to have Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA, with the workers and also denied them the right to join union, among others.

Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has called on the Federal Government to initiate an action that will ensure the recovery of over $400 billion looted from the country’s treasury over the years. Rising from a meeting in Enugu at the weekend, the CNPP said, “ whereas we applaud the recovery of fund looted by the late head of state, General Sani Abacha, we demand as a matter of urgent national importance that President Goodluck Jonathan  requests for blanket recovery of over $400 billion fleeced off our treasury in the last two decades ”CNPP was reacting to the report by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke that the Federal Government had recovered about N5.5 billion ( 22.5 million British Pound) and that negotiation had reached an advanced stage to recover N36.7 billion (EUR 175 million) of Abacha looted fund. The communiqué signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Osita  Okechukwu, urged President Jonathan “to utilize the window opened by the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which bound countries to render mutual legal assistance in gathering and transferring evidence and Chapter V of the Convention, which made asset recovery explicitly a fundamental principle of the Convention. “Our investigation within the diplomatic circle shows that ex-president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo only requested for Abacha’s loot and turned blind eye to the other looters. We demand that a blanket request be made, for we need the billions of dollars to invest in critical infrastructure, revamp our decayed social services and stem gross unemployment. ”The group frowned at “the selective approach in the loot recovery process, which looks more of a vindictive venture rather than a war against corruption. The selective approach sends wrong signals within and outside our shores. Therefore, we appeal for effective liaison and communication with targeted countries to hasten the pace of recovery of funds siphoned out of our treasury.”

Two teenage sisters, 16 year old Noor Basra and 15 year old Noor Sheza (both pictured above) were shot dead in their home in the town of Chilas, in Pakistan after a video showing the two girls laughing and dancing in the rain was circulated through mobile phones.
Apparently dancing with your sibling in the rain and filming it is a crime punishable by death in the Northern region of Gilgit. The video caused an outrage in the town and a few days later, five men invaded the girls home and shot them dead - for - wait for it - 'tarnishing their family's name’. Their mother was also shot dead.
The girls' step-brother, a man named Khutore, is being accused of arranging their murder because he allegedly wanted to 'restore the family's honour'. The sisters' other brother filed a case against him and the four other alleged accomplices who are now on the run. The police are investigating the case.

Three stewards working at the Akwa Ibom state governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, were on Friday summarily dismissed by the governor, Godswill Akpabio, over missing bundles of mint-fresh dollars valued at over $250,000 (N40 million) kept in the governor’s bedroom, news website Saharareporters, is reporting. The governor, who reportedly ordered the sack of the aides (described as political appointees) personally detected on Wednesday, during his visit to Abuja, that bundles of the foreign currency he left in his bedroom had been stolen while he attended a dinner with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Rock Villa.
According to the website, the missing dollars, kept in drawers in the governor’s bedroom, were leftovers from a trough of hard currency stashed away in a private security safe in the apartment. Governor Akpabio, the report says, expressed surprise that despite the near impregnable security in the lodge, coupled with the fact that the locks to that section of the lodge, including the governor’s bedroom, were routinely changed each time such heavy cash is brought in, the money still disappeared in the manner it did.
While it was yet to be ascertained that the dismissed steward actually stole the funds, they are being punished for “apparent negligence in allowing the real culprits to gain access to the otherwise restricted area of the lodge”, the report says. Saharareporters quoted a source close to the governor’s lodge as saying more heads might roll as investigations continue to find the identities of the other culprits involved in the theft of Mr. Akpabio’s cash.
The source reportedly claimed accusing fingers were being pointed at another staff member at the lodge described as one of those in charge of the overall management of the apartment.
Pilfering of huge cash in the lodge has become a recurring event, the report adds. “In one instance, it was learnt that after bundles of cash disappeared under similar circumstances, the burglary proof and window protectors around the governor’s apartment were changed sometime last year after the perpetrators broke through the ceiling to gain access to the room where cash was stacked in ‘Ghana must go’ bags,” the website writes.
It recalls that a few years ago, the governor redeployed all the civil servants at the lodge and replaced them with political appointees and other private consultants he thought could be trusted. The website says Governor Akpabio is scrambling to keep this latest incidence of theft in his bedroom under wraps.
The governor’s spokesperson could not be reached for comments Saturday night. Well known for his profligacy, Mr. Akpabio is reputed for moving around with huge cash, in violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless economy policy. In March this year, the governor openly donated N1million “lunch money” to party chairmen from the six states in the South-South geopolitical zone who had converged on Port Harcourt for a party reconciliation session.
In March 2012, three staff of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCo) attached to Arik Airlines were accused of stealing N1.5million from the luggage of the governor’s protocol attachee, Ebakabasi Etuk, at Ibom International Airport. The suspects were said to have stolen the money from the bundles of cash reportedly carried by the Akwa Ibom State government team on their way back from Lagos where Governor Akpabio was awarded the ‘Sun Newspapers Man of the Year’.

Kanye west tops album chart

He has just welcomed his baby daughter North into the world and it seems the only direction is up for Kanye West as his latest album went straight in at number one.
The star's new offering, Yeezus, is his first number one album in the UK since 2007's Graduation and his fourth Official Top 10 album over all, the Official charts Company said.
The follow-up to his collaboration with Jay-Z, Watch The Throne, Yeezus was produced by Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Run DMC) and features guest appearances from Daft Punk, Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi, Charlie Wilson and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon.
It is the second celebration this week for Kanye, who has just become a parent to baby North with his partner Kim Kardashian.
Last week's chart topper, 13 by Black Sabbath, is down one place to number two while Kodaline - who had been leading the race to number one on Wednesday's official chart update - are new in at number three with their debut album In A Perfect World. The albums chart is completed by Rod Stewart's Time at four and Passenger's All The Little Lights at five.
US R&B star Robin Thicke topped the Official Singles Chart for a fourth week in a row with Blurred Lines.
The summer anthem, which also features TI and Pharrell Williams, fought off competition from Jason Derulo's The Other Side (number two) to retain its position.
Blurred Lines is now the second biggest-selling single of 2013 so far, clocking up a further 133,000 sales over the last seven days, to bring its total combined sales tally to 718,000 copies.
Daft Punk's Get Lucky, which also features Pharrell, remains this year's biggest-selling single and is fast approaching one million copies.
La La La by Naughty Boy FT Sam Smith, and Let Her Go by Passenger, both fell one place to number three and number four respectively, while Dizzee Rascal completed the top five with Goin' Crazy FT Robbie Williams.

This is a bizarre story but according to The Sun UK, it really happened in the city of Wuhan in China
A couple are believed to have fallen to their deaths when a window they were having sex against gave way. The horrific accident allegedly happened in China when the glass pane shattered.
The tragic man and woman are then understood to have hurtled to their deaths. Eyewitnesses said the couple both fell to the ground as they clinched on to each other.
A source in China said: “With the two of them holding each other tight, they fell out of the building”. Shocking photos in China appear to show the couple on the ground under sheets. Blood is splattered near their bodies on the pavement.
Medical staff and what appear to be police officers can also be seen examining the scene. The man and woman are thought to have fallen out of an apartment in the city of Wuhan, central China.

3 Corps members abducted in Rivers

Gunmen have kidnapped three members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Rivers State. Checks by Sunday Sun revealed that a female Corps member was among those abducted yesterday.
The corps members, whose whereabouts remained unknown as at press time, were forcibly whisked away from the Corpers’ Lodge in Ogonokom Community Secondary School in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the gunmen stormed the lodge at about midnight, firing shots into the air to scare the residents of the neighbourhood and escaped with the victims who were yet to be officially identified. Sources told Sunday Sun that no contact had been established with relations and colleagues of the kidnapped corps members as at the time of filing this report.
Also, no group had claimed responsibility for their abduction. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Angela Agabe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the incident to journalists.
She said that the Police had commenced a manhunt of the kidnappers and that efforts were being made to secure the release of the corps members. A source within the National Youth Service Corps secretariat in Port Harcourt, who did not want to be identified, said corps members in Ogonokom community have been relocated temporarily.

Embattled Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday threatened to quit the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) if the PDP makes the reversal of the suspension of Obio/Akpor local council executives a condition for his readmission into the party.
He also warned that if the party pushed him to a corner where he would be left with no option, he would outrightly dissolve the entire executive of the council as he is constitutionally empowered to do so.
Amaechi made all these known and more while responding to inquiries by the Bishop of the Anglican Communion, Niger Delta Diocese, Rev. Ignatius C. Kattey, at the 60th birthday thanksgiving service in honour of the former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), O.C.J. Okocha (SAN) in Port Harcourt.
Amaechi, who maintained that he was not the one who ordered the suspension of the council officials, but the state House of Assembly, told the gathering, “If they suffocate us in PDP and we need to move, we move.”
He continued, “If they (PDP) reverse it tomorrow, there is one more option left to me, I can dissolve the entire executive. The police can remain there as much as they want, it is Obio/Akpor people’s problem; the money is going nowhere. We have saved you too, because the reason they suspended the executives is because they said, ‘let us investigate the place because there was corruption.’
“If they investigate and the chairman and the councillors are not corrupt, they will call them back. But if they go to court to try to stop them, they will do their function. I want to hear the court say they have no right to do their function. Whatever the court says is what the Rivers State Government will do. We will obey the court, but outside that, nobody, not even PDP, can give me condition. Is there only one party in Nigeria? Why would they give me condition? They will not give me condition.“I lead the people of Rivers State and I will lead you. If they suffocate us in PDP and we need to move, we move! We will continue to struggle for our rights, and that includes our oil wells. You will hear the truth of this fight in December, January. I will address the state and I will tell you the truth of the fight.
“The fight is not between me and these people here, they are not a problem to me. But when election comes, the Rivers people will be given the chance to choose who they want,” he said.
The Bishop also sought to know if indeed there was an election that returned Amaechi as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).
Responding, the governor said: “I don’t lie. If I will go to hell, lie wouldn’t be one of the reasons for my going to hell. Take it from me, those who lie don’t have courage, I have them in quantum; my children have excess of courage.
“Your Grace, there was an election. Your Grace, they are not denying that there was an election. They said before the election some people have signed documents for them, and they were 19, but in contesting the election, those 19 changed their minds and voted for me, and when the battle was on, it was clear that it was between the ‘Villa’ and me, and I won.“There was an election and they were properly defeated and they saw the consequences of defeat. It is a Governors’ Forum I have led for two years. Even the 16 that voted for my opponent told me ‘you were wonderful as the chairman, but you know where the pressure is coming from and we can’t avoid the pressure. I won and won well, tomorrow morning, I will win again.”

United States (US) President, Barack Obama, has said terrorism will likely rear its head in countries lacking democratic tenets. Obama stated this in Soweto, South Africa, while interacting with Young African Leaders. The US President said it was his strong belief that terrorism is more likely to emerge and take root where countries are not delivering for the people and where there is social conflict underlining frustrations that have not been adequately dealt with.
Obama said: “So, there is need to build that institution called responsiveness in governance and in democracy. Those things become defence mechanisms against terrorism.
“If you have a country that has high illiteracy rate you are going to have these problems. This is also a problem in the US, not only in Africa. That is why I want to push the US Congress to improve early college education.
“Across the border, we are having a rethink on education and workforce strength and one of them we want to do is to partner with Nigeria in identifying with whether we can train teachers by incorporating technology into the education process,” Obama said.
President Obama also said the US would like to build African capacity, noting that the US wanted the African Union and other regional organizations to send in peace keepers.
“We can provide advice and training, and in some cases, equipment. That is what we can do, but what we won’t do is to stand by and watch our embassies being attacked. So, we need countries to work with us in order to do away with some of these things,” he said.

Fresh JTF, Boko Haram clash in Yobe

Renewed gun duel between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and Boko Haram insurgents in Yobe State on Friday has led to the recovery a cache of arms , JTF spokesman, Lieutenant Eli Lazarus, said.
Lt. Lazarus while displaying the cache of arms yesterday to journalists in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, said the duel with the insurgents was ignited by an attack on a military checkpoint at Fune Local Government on Friday evening.
He disclosed that the Boko Haram carted away a vehicle conveying some items meant for the police in Borno, adding that JTF troops had to intercept the insurgents and engage them in a gun battle, leading to the recovery of two vehicles, arms, ammunition and other items.
“The JTF pursued and engaged them in gun fight thereby overpowering the terrorists and recovered the stolen vehicle as well as another used by the group.
“Other items recovered include one AK-47 rifle, three Rocket Propelled Gun (RPG) bombs, three RPG chargers, one riot gun, and 485 rounds of ammunition. Also 42 police fragmentation jackets, 44 police helmets, six AK-47 rifle magazines, 80 fragmentation blades and illicit drugs were also recovered from the terrorists,” he said.
The JTF claimed some of the suspects fled with gunshot injuries, even as he appealed to residents to report anyone found with gunshot wounds to security operatives in the area.
The clash came barely a day after members of the presidential committee on dialogue and reconciliation on security challenges in the North, visited the state and promised to reach out to the insurgents.

That's about £1.25k a month. And it's news. I'm not the one making it news o...its The Sun UK. They are probably wondering why a multi millionaire pop star is dating and pregnant for a guy who earns in a year what she probably earns in day. Well, it's called love. Check out The Sun UKreport below..
The father of Alesha Dixon’s baby is a £15,000-a-year dancer who lives in a modest flat. Britain’s Got Talent star Alesha stunned the showbiz world last week by revealing she is pregnant with Azuka Ononye’s child. Until that point the millionaire former pop star had kept the relationship secret.
And far from being a fellow celebrity, Azuka, or AZ as he is known to pals, came from humble beginnings in Nigeria and has had to scrape a living for years.

When he was a teenager he moved to the UK for a better life with his two elder brothers. They raised him in a council flat in Fulham, West London — where he still lived until recently. It’s a world away from the Hertfordshire mansion owned by Alesha, who earns £400,000 as a BGT judge and has other lucrative contracts.
Last night a close pal said: “She and AZ are perfect for each other and they are madly in love, but they couldn’t have more different lives.”
AZ hates sponging off Alesha, 34, and insists on paying his own way, but the former singer with Noughties girl group Mis-Teeq has treated him to the high life.
They have been on several expensive holidays to Miami and Europe.

Meanwhile, his pals have dubbed him the “Louis Vuitton man” because of the designer clothes she buys him.
Our exclusive pictures show the couple at a 32nd birthday party Alesha arranged for AZ earlier this year. She booked The Crazy Bear Club in Beaconsfield, Bucks, and invited all his friends and family - splashing out thousands of pounds.
The couple met in 2006 when AZ worked as a dancer for R&B group Mis-Teeq, whose hits included Scandalous.
At the time Alesha was still recovering from the heartache of being two-timed by So Solid Crew husband, MC Harvey, 34.
Alesha and AZ became great friends, but did not take it further until 2010.

Anambra 2014: Ubah picks LP form

Frontline gubernatorial aspirant and chairman of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah yesterday registered himself formerly as a card-carrying member of the Labour Party (LP).
Ubah who stormed Otolo Nnewi Ward I of the party in Nnewi North Local Government Area chapter of the party in Anambra State at about 1 p.m, with his crowd of supporters, was received on arrival at the Ward I office of the party located inside Okpuno Community Hall by the Obi of Okpuno, Chief Emeka Okafor and party ward executives.
He was guided through the registration processes and signing of necessary documents by the chairman of the party in Otolo Nnewi Ward I, Amobi Nkeirumonye and the secretary, Mr. Emeka Adirika who later issued him with a membership registration card No. 0018073.
Ubah and his supporters later moved to Nnewi North Local Government party office along Owerri Road, Nnewi where promised to assist the executive in furnishing the empty office complex. He at once moved to the state party office in Awka and addressed the mammoth crowd.
In his speech, Ubah explained the rationale behind his decision to contest the 2014 governorship race on the platform of the LP.
He explained that the race to Government House Awka is virtually a contest among four major political parties namely: Labour, PDP, APGA, and ACN (APC), adding, “as already stated, AGPA is in crisis. PDP is also in crisis. ACN or APC is in a trance, so, what remains is Labour”.
Ubah said he believed that his ambition would be better realised in a party with one spirit and a party that affiliates with the yearnings of the masses, a people oriented party, adding, “I strongly believe too, that I will outshine other candidates aspiring to use the same Labour platform to achieve their governorship ambitions during the party primary”.
Responding, the state chairman of the party, Sam Oraegbunam commended Ubah for his wise decision and assured him that he would realise his ambition in Labour which is structured for better and for success.

The federal government has said that Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, did not act outside his constitutional jurisdiction in the execution of four death row inmates in the state. The reaction by the federal government is sequel to the Monday execution of Osaremwinda Aigbuohian, Daniel Nsofor, and two others in Edo State, a situation that generated both local and international criticisms.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja during the stakeholders consultative forum on the 2nd cycle of Nigeria’s Universal Periodic Review, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, said that the constitution and the criminal code were handed over to Nigeria during the colonial administration.
He emphasised that the constitution remained the guiding principle to the nation, saying Nigeria should not shy away to what is right according to the dictates of the constitution
“In Edo state, what happened recently has nothing to do with the federal government. We have a constitution where the states are autonomous.
“Don’t forget the constitution was followed by review but the criminal code that we are using was handed over to us by the colonial powers and it is when the constitution is reviewed that the status quo will be reviewed.
“So, there are areas where governors have authorities and in this case, that was what happened in Edo State where the governor exercised the constitutional provision to sign the execution that is there.
“I think the governor of Edo State, acted within his constitutional power.
“So, don’t shy away to what we believed is right and what we believe is in the constitution. We have a constitution and it is our constitution that will guide us. When we look around, it is our constitution that will guide us,” Ashiru said.

Much touted presidential hopeful and Governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has declared that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is a large party and anyone of its members can become President in 2015.
Lamido, who is widely believed to be nursing a presidential ambition in 2015, was speaking in an interview with Channels Television where he narrated his chances of clinching the PDP ticket for the forthcoming general elections. He said, “Anybody in the PDP can become the President,” adding that “It can be me; it can be Jonathan or anybody”.

For posting the marijuana photos on her instagram page, a representative of The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is saying actress Tonto Dikeh faces jail term.

NDLEA spokesman Mr. Mitchell Ofoyejus told Punch

“Our attention has been drawn to the post quite frankly and I can tell you that action will be taken on it. The law is clear and NDLEA has been very clear on the issue. No one is permitted to sell, use, cultivate or encourage the use of Indian hemp in Nigeria. The weed is one of the banned narcotics in the country.
“NDLEA Act Section 14 (b) states that any person who conspires with, aids, abets, counsels, attempts to commit or is an accessory to any act or offence referred to in this act shall be guilty of an offence under this act and liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25 years.
So if you get 15 years for posting a weed photo on social media, what do you now get for selling and distributing? And what about those who sing about it? I don't get! Continue...
“Investigation has not started as of now but definitely, a step has to be taken on the matter. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse; so, it is obvious that the actress stands the risk of 15 years jail term. The appropriate department is meeting on the issue for necessary action.”

The NDLEA spokesman, however, declined to give any hint on particular steps the agency would take in its investigation, citing reasons bearing on ethics.
